The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Catherine is the founder and facilitator of the Humanitarian and Environmental Alliance at the University of Pittsburgh. The Humanitarian and Environmental Alliance aims to strengthen the effectiveness of humanitarian and environmental organizations and activists through trainings, gatherings and interorganization communication. Catherine is also a member of the InterCultural House. She loves working for social justice and has done much work with STAND (Students Taking Action Now: Darfur), FORGE (Facilitating Opportunities for Refugee Growth and Empowerment), Summerbridge Pittsburgh, Morry's Camp, and AmeriCorps*NCCC.
