The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Jessica has been directly involved with environmental activism for some time, doing important canvassing work with Clean Water Action and co-founding the 2006 Temple University chapter of the Sierra Club. Jessica has recently been elected as Vice President of the Chi Alpha Epsilon Honors Society, Omicron Chapter. With related interests including women's rights, Jessica is working to take a leadership role in increasing civic engagement on her campus.
