The gentrification of the Mission District brought a "gang list" that affected young people in a 60-block radius, limiting their freedom of movement and association. Vicente Garcia used his 2007 Young People For fellowship to organize the community to stop the gang list.

Ryan is a member of City College's student organization Pilipinos for Education, Arts, Culture and Empowerment (PEACE). His college experience in journalism has inspired him to tackle different community issues. He is an alumnus of the activism training retreat held by Asian American Community Training (ACT) and is a representative in UC Berkeley's Asian Pacific American Coalition (APAC), an umbrella organization that represents the various Asian student organizations on the UC Berkeley campus. He has worked for the community as an ESL coach, fundraiser, scholar and community volunteer. His interests include enacting proactive solutions to global warming and encouraging people to live in defiance of stereotypes while fostering progressive attitudes in matters of culture, ethnicity and gender.
